Publisher's Synopsis
The essays comprising this book grew out of a series of public lectures entitled "Dimensions of Islam" delivered at the American University of Beirut during the academic year 1964-65. These lectures discussed both the religion of Islam and diverse aspects of the civilization created by this tradition, endeavouring to present religious beliefs faithfully in contemporary language, without deviating from the traditional point of view. This volume contains the first six lectures, dealing with Islam itself.;Seyyed Hossein Nasr was the first occupant of the Aga Khan Chair of Islamic studies at the University of Beirut, and from 1974 has been director of the Imperial Iranian Academy of Philosophy.
